What the ratio measures

The number this page sorts on is one division. Take the volume of the latest completed hourly candle, divide it by the median hourly volume of the last 72 hours — a trailing window that includes that candle itself — and that is the 72-hour volume ratio. Two choices in that sentence do the work. A median rather than an average means one earlier outlier cannot raise the bar for everything after it. A per-pair baseline means a thin pair trading four times its own normal hour ranks alongside a large one doing the same.

The steps this feeds inside the score

The scoring code turns the same ratio into points: 10x or more counts as a volume shock and is worth 25, 5x is strong volume at 18, 2.5x is elevated at 10, 2.0x scores 8, and 1.5x scores 6. Under 1.5x the volume component contributes nothing at all. The scorer also keeps a 7-day baseline as a fallback, discounted by 30% so it only takes over when the 72-hour median has been inflated by a recent spike — the ratio shown in the table here is the raw 72-hour one.

Why the cut is at 3x

3x sits between elevated and strong. Filtering at 2.5x fills the table with ordinary session variance on quiet pairs; filtering at 5x leaves it empty most of the day. Nothing was fitted to choose the middle value — it is a readability decision, not a measured one.

A spike carries no direction

An hour at 6x on the way into a collapse and an hour at 6x on the way into a breakout are identical here. That is the honest limit of this page, and it is why price change sits in the columns beside the ratio: the volume tells you something happened, and only the price tells you what. Whether either is worth acting on is the question answered, unfavourably, on the track record page.

This page ranks candidates by construction — it is not a prediction and not a recommendation to buy or sell anything. See the track record for what this scoring has and has not demonstrated out of sample.
